Behind
The

Scenes

The madness is apparent in this episode. Bobby Singh the Seek House-Mate is actually a successful bangra artist, Nicola Colmer, who plays the desperate single mother is a Lee Strasberg Company in Los Angeles, graduate, and Matt Jay who plays Rhodri has his own Theatre company, “ish…” Theatre.

The Bobby Singh scene marked the one-week point in the 16-day shoot and was also the first day they started filming with two cameras. Until then they only had the one and tell us they remember being worried they wouldn’t finish the shoot with only the one camera. The camera was lent by Paul Whittaker, whom James had done some acting for about six years before. The play was at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff and he played a mental patient, ironically called Rhodri as well. Another coincidence was that it was exactly the same specification of camera that was  already being used a Sony Z1 HDV.

As mentioned yesterday the Rhodri scene was written by Darren Lysenko a brilliant writer from London. Matt Jay loved it and took it almost literally in his preparation. On the day of filming he covered his clothes in chilli powder and kept on breathing into a bag of crushed onions. This annoyed some of the crew but amused the rest enormously.

Due to that strange nature of Rhodri meeting Taj, James made sure Sunny (playing Taj) didn’t see Matt before the filming. He actually sent Matt on a run around the block while Sunny prepared himself. The crew did the set up and when everything was in place James gave a wave to Matt in the distance to start coming towards the car. He'd been instructed to get straight in and start the scene. This is what actually happened when they first met.
